Transfer a foreign driving license for Germany
Driver's license transfer
Startseite » Führerschein » Driver’s license transfer (english)
We are transfer specialists.
If you have already obtained a driving license abroad (non-EU), you must transfer it no later than 6 months after first establishing residence in Germany. After that, the validity of the driving license from abroad expires and you are no longer allowed to drive with it in Germany.
As a driving school, we offer you the exclusive service of being able to look after you both in the office and during driving lessons in English and German.
Documents required for the transfer
In order to continue driving in Germany after the 6 months, you need the documents listed below. As soon as you have all the documents together, make an appointment with the KVR. The clerk there will inform you about what steps are necessary to obtain your German driving license.
- Registration at our driving school to transfer your driver's license
- Eye-sight-test (at the optician etc.)
- First aid course
- Official translation of your driver's license (e.g. at ADAC)
- Biometric passport photos
- Appointment at your responsible driving license office (in Munich the KVR)
Theory lessons and driving lessons in English
In most cases, the driving license office only requires you to take a theoretical and practical exam.
In order to pass the exams, you should study for the theory exam with an app, which you can obtain from us and is available in 12 official languages, just like the exam itself. These are: English, French, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Croatian, Spanish, Turkish and High Arabic.
Theory lessons:
However, as there are often still some questions or unclear topics, we also offer exclusive theory lessons in English, which include all the essential elements for obtaining a driving license. If you would prefer the lessons in German, you are of course welcome to come to our regular theory lessons. It is not part of the minimum theoretical training, but rather an additional learning offer from us to you.
Driving lessons:
As road traffic with all its rules in Germany is sometimes very complex and certainly very different from what you are used to, we recommend that you take driving lessons. In order to get the most out of your driving lessons, we also offer them in English and German. The driving instructor can explain all the traffic situations you will encounter in detail and in a way that you can understand. Please note that the practical test can only be taken in German. However, our experienced driving instructors will prepare you for this in the best possible way and give you all the skills, abilities and know-how you need to pass the test successfully.
Your advantages
- Theory lessons: Best preparation for the theoretical exam, either in German or English.
- Driving lessons: Comprehensible explanation of all traffic situations in German and English including preparation for the driving test required in German.
- Experienced driving instructors: We know your concerns and know exactly how to best prepare you.
- Low additional costs: For driving lessons in English we only charge an additional €6.00!

Frequently asked questions
A probationary period is only agreed if the foreign driving license is less than 2 years old. What is important here is the date of issue of the foreign driving license, not the German one.
As soon as 6 months have expired (after registering a place of residence in Germany), the foreign driving license from third countries expires and will no longer be recognized thereafter. After this time, you will need a German driver's license.
If you provide proof that you will not live in Germany for longer than 12 months in total, you have the option of extending this period once by another six months. But you have to prove this to the authorities!
You can easily make an appointment online on the City of Munich website.
